One month till Harness Jewels

It’s exactly one month to the Harness Jewels.

At Cambridge Raceway on June 6 the 14th edition of the Harness Jewels will be run, with nine Group One races each worth $100,000.

As of today there are 17 days and 16 meetings left for horses to qualify. The last meeting will be at Rangiora on May 23.

To mark the countdown to one of racing’s biggest days we are re-living some of the classic moments from past Harness Jewels.

And what better place to start than the very first race at the very first Jewels, Ashburton 2007.

And it was the Blair Orange-driven GTH Aveross, trained by Andrew Faulks and Noel Creighton, that got home, paying $81.60 and $20.10.

The Badlands Hanover mare finished with four wins from 62 starts and $134,560 in stakes.

As a broodmare she had nine foals, including eight race winner Aveross Ferrari.

She died in March this year.

GTH Aveross is not the biggest upsetter in Jewels history, that goes to Charlemagne who paid $90.10 when winning in 2012.
