Scenarios

Scenario 1:

I am a non-Group 1 winning trainer, and I purchase a Bettor's Delight yearling at the 2025 NZB Sales for an existing owner.

  • Eligible: The horse qualifies automatically because I am a non-G1 trainer.

Scenario 2:

I am a Group 1 winning trainer, and I purchase a What The Hill yearling for myself and a group of my mates, who are a mixture of new and existing owners, but all are under 40.

  • Eligible: The ownership group meets the criteria for new and younger owners.

Scenario 3:

I am a Group 1 winning trainer, and I purchase a Bettor's Delight yearling at the 2025 NZB Sales for a group of existing owners who are all over 40.

  • Not Eligible: None of the criteria are met because the ownership group does not include new owners or individuals under 40, and Bettor's Delight is not a Next Gen sire.

Scenario 4:

I am a Group 1 winning trainer, and I purchase an Art Major yearling at the 2025 NZB Sales for a group of five existing owners, three of whom are under 40.

  • Eligible: The ownership group meets the criteria, with over 30% of members being under 40.

Scenario 5:

I am a Group 1 winning trainer, and I purchase a What The Hill yearling and syndicate it with a mixture of existing and new owners. Out of the 10 owners, four are new and collectively own 20% of the horse.

  • Eligible: The ownership group meets the criteria because 30% of members are new owners.

Scenario 6:

I am a Group 1 winning trainer, and I purchase a King Of Swing yearling at the 2025 NZB Sales.

  • Eligible: The horse qualifies because King Of Swing is a Next Gen sire.

Scenario 7:

I am a Group 1 winning trainer. An existing owner purchases a Captain Crunch yearling at the 2025 NZB Sales and sends it to me to be trained.

  • Eligible: The horse qualifies because Captain Crunch is a Next Gen sire, regardless of my Group 1 status or the ownership group composition.

Scenario 8:

I am a Group 1 winning trainer, and I purchase a What The Hill yearling and syndicate it with a group of five owners, one of whom is new and takes a 50% share.

  • Not Eligible: The horse does not qualify because only one out of five owners is new, which does not meet the requirement that at least 30% of the ownership group consists of new owners or individuals under 40.

Key Takeaways

  • Yearlings must be purchased at the 2025 NZB Sales and meet ONE additional criterion to qualify for Next Gen.

  • Understanding eligibility ensures you and your owners can maximise the benefits of Next Gen.

  • For G1 winning trainers, collaborating with owners to meet eligibility criteria—through ownership composition or sire selection—is essential to success.
